Fight Huge Water Rate Increases

News 3/31/2010

CARE is pleased with the progress that Jim Abercrombie has been making in reducing the cost of EID operation.  We urge him to continue along that line.

Your protest letters have helped EID understand that the
Rate Payers are not going to stand for an 80% increase
over the next five years

EID passed an 18% increase in the first year, 15% in the second year, followed by 5% for each of the next three years.

 News 2/18/2010

Based on an EID press release and the results of CARE volunteers sitting at grocery stores Saturday January 30th CARE believes that there were well over 7,000 protest letters sent to EID.  Looking at the web statistics and the results of Saturdays CARE volunteers we believes that CARE has been responsible for over half of those letters.

This is not enough to stop the rate increase  but would be more than enough to qualify a recall initiative for the ballot. From talking to people and the emails that CARE has received, an the initiative would pass by a huge majority.  However at this time CARE is not calling for a recall because CARE believes better results can be achieved by working with EID.

The number of protest letters that EID received sent a powerful message to EID and in no small way was responsible for the proposed rate reduction.  For all of you who volunteered or participated by sending your protest letter you should feel a sense of pride for what you have done.

Citizens Against Rate Extortion (CARE) is a group of civic-minded people that live in the EID service area.  CARE understands that services are not free and that we should pay for them but thinks that the eighty percent increase in water rates over five years that was originally proposed by EID is extreme.
